Orienteering is the sport
of navigation with map and compass. The object is to run, walk, ski,
or mountain bike to a series of points shown on the map, choosing
routes–both on and off trail–that will help you find all the points
and get back to the finish in the shortest amount of time.
The Swedish booklet cover shows the map and compass needed for the
sport, while the stamps in the booklet show an orienteering
participant. The booklet was issued in 1968 to publicize the World
Championships in Orienteering held in Linkoping, September 28-29.
The stamp from Aaland
shows the map and compass of the orienteer. It was issued January 2,
1986 to celebrate the 1986 Nordic Orienteering Championships, August
30-31.
The Finnish stamp shows a
stylized map and compass with locations and routes. It was issued in
2000 to mark the Orienteering World Championship May 16, 2001 at
Tampere, Finland.
