French Explorers

Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936) led the second French expedition to Antarctica, 1908-1910. In January 1909 they crossed the Antarctic Circle and made camp on Peterman Island. They reached 70N 76W in 1910 and explored the coast to 124. They returned to France in 1910. Their ship, the Pourquois-Pas (Why Not?) is seen in the background of the stamp which was issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Charcot's death. The stamp does not show a map but a compass rose.
