The Wrong Accent

Ivory Coast 946

The map on the stamp issued by the Ivory Coast in 1993 is identified as a "Map of the Ivory Coast drawn according to the documents of M.A. Verdier."  Arthur Verdier was a trader on the Ivory Coast, the Warden of the French Flag, and from 1878 the official French representative or Resident there. There is no indication whether the documents mentioned included a map or a verbal description of the area, so the nature of the error is not clear.
At the bottom of the map it appears that the word "Guinée".  It should be spelled "Guinèe," with a grave rather than an acute accent (see along the left side of the map). Thanks to Pierre Moïse for calling this to my attention.
