St. Brendan founded several monasteries in Ireland. Then, with a group of monks, left Ireland looking for the promised land. After seven years and many adventures they came to “The Land of the Saints” somewhere in the Western Ocean. Some claim that this land is North America.
    In 1984 Ireland issued this stamp marking the 1500th anniversary of St. Brendan’s birth. The design shows a portrait of St. Brendan and a manuscript page (possibly from a medieval manuscript of The Voyage of St. Brendan).
